Welcome to your monthly dose of fresh movie reviews, brought to you by Reel Talk! In this edition of our recurring feature, we take a look at some recent releases and assess their merit from a professional perspective.
Last week, the Hollywood blockbusters delivered yet another seasonal bumper crop of films. From Marvel's highly anticipated Black Panther to Sony Pictures Animation's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, these productions have been lauded for their visual grandeur and emotional resonance. With a little over two weeks left in 2018, it was only natural that we take stock of this year's box office performance.
The latest entry on our list is Walt Disney Studios' Dumbo, which recently opened in theaters across the United States. As a live-action reimagining of the classic 1941 animated film (of the same name), this film has been the subject of considerable interest from viewers and critics alike. We had our hands on the film early last month, where we took it for a spin to see if it lived up to the hype that surrounded its release date.
In Dumbo, Tim Burton's visionary take on this beloved tale is an ambitious one indeed. With its lavish visual style, heartfelt message, and star-studded cast of actors (including Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, and Eva Green), this film has been a major talking point in the months leading up to its release.
The plot follows the story of circus owner Max Medici (Farrell), who seeks to add some glamour to his struggling enterprise with the addition of new star attraction Elephant Boy (Colin Farrell). However, Max's plans soon go awry when he discovers that his son has a condition that makes him fall asleep during performances.
As he attempts to address this issue, Max also grapples with his own personal demons and the expectations of others in his life. The film is packed with intricate detail and impressive visuals, from the intricately detailed sets to the lavish costumes and props. It's clear that Burton has taken great care to ensure that every aspect of this movie reflects the original story.
As for the cast, Colin Farrell and Michael Keaton are in top form as the two titans of their respective fields (Farrell as Max, and Keaton as Pete). The film also boasts a killer voice cast, with Zach Galifianakis as a witty and amusing narrator. As for the supporting characters, the standout performances are from our favorite animal actors: Tilda Swinton and Dann Devine (as Elephant Boy's mother) and Dylan Sprouse (as the elephant).
While this movie certainly has its share of plot holes and predictable storylines, it is a pleasure to watch. With a runtime of 2 hours and 20 minutes, Dumbo is an extended version of the original film, giving us more time to explore the relationships between Max and his son. This makes for a more nuanced and emotionally resonant tale than the animated classic.
In terms of audience appeal, this film has been met with critical acclaim, earning it an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's box office performance has also been solid, making $340 million worldwide against a production budget of $125 million.
Overall, we would recommend that viewers give Dumbo a watch this weekend. Its visuals and message are powerful enough to appeal to adult audiences while remaining engaging for younger viewers. With an impressive cast and strong reviews, it's certainly worth a look if you're in the mood for a whimsical and visually stunning film.
Recommended for: Family-friendly films with heartwarming messages and intricate visuals that are sure to leave a lasting impression on viewers of all ages.
