2. Yule Lads (Iceland)

For 13 nights leading up to Christmas, Icelandic children are visited by mischievous Yule Lads who leave small gifts and sometimes playful pranks in their shoes. Each lad has his own unique personality and trick, from stealing sausages to leaving a lump of rotting potato.

3. Posadas (Mexico)

In Mexico, the nine days leading up to Christmas are celebrated with candlelit processions, singing, and reenactments of Mary and Joseph's search for shelter in Bethlehem. On each evening, neighbors gather to sing 'Las Posadas' and break piñatas filled with candy.

4. St. Lucia's Day (Scandinavia)

On December 22nd, Spain holds the world's biggest lottery draw, where millions of people buy tickets in hopes of winning a life-changing prize. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages and is often referred to as 'El Gordo' or 'The Fat One.'

12. Sinterklaas (Netherlands)

Before Santa Claus arrived in the Netherlands, children would leave out their shoes for Sinterklaas, a bearded bishop in red robes, who would fill them with treats and gifts on December 5th, St. Nicholas' Eve.
